Design Process

Research into design technologies and techniques are at the forefront of the garment creation process. Each unique piece springs first and foremost from an intuitive relationship to the sustainably resourced or vintage materials. Fabrics and accessories are conceptually and aesthetically explored through an extensive process of fine illustration, bricolage, print and digital mash-up.

Prototyping

All garment prototyping, pattern making, cutting and construction is undertaken by myself following the conceptual design phase. This sets my practise apart from many other contemporary designers who commonly take a hands off or off-shore approach to making.
In deconstructing up-cycled garments, it is absolutely necessary to have a close working relationship with each piece in order to explore and redefine new possibilities.

Printing and Embellishing

Printing and hand embellishment techniques are a significant aspect of my work. Sustainably repurposed and up-cycled fabrics and accessories are transformed through the application of surface treatments both in the pre and post-garment construction phase.

Many of the techniques used are experimental or non-traditional and reflect my interest in carrying on the traditions of hand embellishing in new forms, while pushing the materiality and sustainability of fashion forward.
